Digital cameras and smartphones have made photography easier than ever, yet the same handful of mistakes keeps spoiling otherwise good pictures. The good news is that almost all of them are easy to fix once you know what causes them. Here are the most common digital photography mistakes we see at our studio in Ranchi, and exactly how to avoid them.
Blur is the number one complaint, and it usually comes from one of three causes: camera shake, a moving subject, or missed focus.
Photos that are too dark usually mean not enough light is reaching the sensor; washed-out photos mean too much. Cameras are easily fooled by very bright or very dark scenes, such as a white wedding gown or a dark stage.
Shooting at midday produces bright highlights, deep shadows under the eyes and squinting subjects. The difference between the brightest and darkest parts of the scene is simply too big for the sensor.
Some people reduce image size to fit more photos on a memory card. The result is pixelated, low-quality pictures that cannot be printed or cropped. Memory cards are inexpensive today, so always shoot at the highest resolution and quality your camera offers. If you edit your photos, shooting in RAW gives you far more room to correct exposure and colour later.
When the subject is far away, it is tempting to pinch-zoom or use the camera’s digital zoom. Digital zoom only crops and enlarges the image, which destroys detail. Instead, walk closer, use an optical zoom lens, or frame the subject within its surroundings so the distance becomes part of the story.
Indoor bulbs can make skin look orange, and shade can turn everything blue. Set white balance to match the light (daylight, shade, tungsten) or use a custom setting. If you shoot RAW, white balance can be corrected easily afterwards.
Heavy filters, extreme skin smoothing and oversaturated colours date quickly and make people look artificial. Aim for natural skin tones and gentle contrast. For important images, a professional photo editing and retouching service will keep results polished but realistic.
Memory cards fail, phones are lost and hard drives crash. Follow a simple 3-2-1 rule: keep three copies of important photos, on two different types of storage, with one copy kept somewhere else (for example, cloud storage). If the worst happens, our data recovery service in Ranchi can often retrieve deleted or corrupted photos from cards and drives.
These tips will noticeably improve everyday photos. For once-in-a-lifetime moments such as weddings, a baby’s first photoshoot or a corporate launch, there is no second chance, and experience with lighting, timing and equipment makes the difference. AnnuVision has been photographing families and businesses in Ranchi since 1998, from candid wedding photography to portfolio shoots and commercial product photography.
